Frances Hodgkins

1869 - 1947 / New Zealand

At first glance Frances Hodgkins work does not seem particularly suited to textile and scarf design. She was primarily a landscape painter and her design for an Ascher Square reflects this. It is a landscape watercolor of the island, Ibiza. However her choice of colors and use of contrast work particularly well with silk and look wonderful whether draped or framed. The necessary utility of a scarf was a question that each artist in the project choose to deal with in a different way.
